On 01/01/2008 Malta and Cyprus joined the European currency union knows as "Euro". This important historic event started a new discussion about another highly explosive topic:
Is the EU ready for new members anytime soon or should we, the “big family of 27”, say NO! until we have solved the current problems of the eastern enlargement?
On the one hand the EU’s main aim is to bring even commonwealth to all of its members, but this needs more time than most member states like to wait.
For instance: When Ireland entered the EU back in 1973 it had the nickname “poorhouse of Europe” for many decades but nowadays the not only the economy but the whole wealth of the Irish has increased rapidly. This not only happened to Ireland but also to Italy and Spain. Many see these as examples of how it should be.
So this showed the Europeans learnt to help each other but surprisingly especially new member states like Romania or Bulgaria are scared this could endanger their chance to get the same wealth for their economy like the “older” member states already gained.
But there are not only economic reasons for or against new EU members.
A big topic is the human right situation in some ‘maybe in future member states’ like Ukraine, Turkey or Belarus. These states have different states of democracy. Officially they call themselves democratic countries but in our point of view, they make use of the torture and death penalty.
So how much do these maybe soon to be members fit into our community?
Another big difference with Turkey for instance would be the religious tensions, because all other members are mainly Christian countries with other religions in minority.
But that’s all still up in the air.
Right now the EU has talks with some states like Serbia about their current situation within Europe but only time will tell us if this is a first step into getting new members.
In my opinion the EU is not ready for new member states yet. We still have to solve current economic and cultural problems first, like separatist tendencies in the ‘old members’ and the just joined countries to make sure it will work out for all of us.
In the end I think the European continent could become something like a little UN with the EU. Giving the minor states a voice in the theatre of big global players.
So sooner or later new members will join the EU, the only left question is when.
